McCoy, 2009 USA Walker Cup Member Smith Share Medalist Honors

Kiawah Island, S.C. – Nathan Smith, 31, of Pittsburgh, Pa., the 2003 champion, and two-time semifinalist Mike McCoy, 46, of West Des Moines, Iowa, shared medalist honors Sunday with 36-hole stroke play scores of 3-under-par 140 at the 2009 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at The Kiawah Island Club.

In the second round of stroke play Smith, a member of last month’s victorious USA Walker Cup squad, shot a 4-under-par 68 at Cassique (6,964 yards, par 72), while McCoy, a semifinalist in 2005 and 2008, carded a 1-over-par 72 at The River Course (6,908 yards, par 71).

“That’s an honor,” Smith said of sharing the low qualifying mark. “There are so many good players. It’s an accomplishment. Medalist or co-medalist or, whatever, that’s an honor.”

Smith’s bogey-free round included birdies at holes one, five, 11 and 17. It matched the 68s McCoy and Cameron Mackenzie of Canada shot on Saturday for the low round of stroke play.

“I played solid and just tried to get into match play,” said Smith, who also helped Pennsylvania claim the 2009 USGA State Team Championship last month at the Country Club of St. Albans in suburban St. Louis. “I had some key up and downs that kept the round going.”

Smith, an investment advisor, was the oldest member of the USA Walker Cup squad and contributed to two wins in foursomes (alternate shot) play. Sharing the qualifying medal continues a stellar streak.

“It’s been a fun year, words can’t even describe,” said Smith. “To be down here at Kiawah, it doesn’t get any better than that: win, lose or draw.”

Smith and defending champion Steve Wilson (149) highlighted the six past champions who advanced to match play. That group also included Tennesseans Tim Jackson and Danny Green (146), Las Vegas resident Kevin Marsh (147), and Dave Womack (149) of McDonough, Ga.

Two past champions, George Zahringer (152) and Austin Eaton III (159), did not advance. Buddy Marucci, the 2008 USGA Senior Amateur champion and the USA Walker Cup captain in 2007 and 2009, also made match play.

“It’s a bonus,” McCoy said of sharing the medal. “I’ve never won the medal. I’ve been second. I’ve qualified pretty well in a lot of these. It’s nice just because I’ve never done it. In the grand scheme of things, I guess it’s not that important. It’s just punching your ticket [for match play].”

McCoy made a birdie against two bogeys for his 71 but remained satisfied with his game.

“The game is fine. It’s just fine,” McCoy said. “When you play with Tim Mickelson who is hitting it 40 and 50 yards by you, you feel a little inferior. But I’m driving it awfully straight and I am hitting it solid. My short game is good.”

Derek Berg, 28, of Duvall, Wash., and Robert Gerwin, 42, of Cincinnati, Ohio, finished one stroke behind Smith and McCoy at 2-under-par 141.

Three others: Chris Marin, 31, of Monterey, Calif., Jeff Wilson, 46, of Fairfield, a three-time medalist and four-time quarterfinalist in the Mid-Amateur, and Tripp Davis, 42, of Norman, Okla., trailed by two strokes at 1-under 140.

Only two of the nine South Carolina players, Bert Atkinson, 51, of Charleston, who was the Mid-Amateur runner-up in 1991, and Mike Cobb, 35, of Summerville, earned berths in match play.

The match play cut came at 7-over-par 150 and a nine-way playoff for the final three places in the 64-player bracket will begin Monday at 7:30 a.m. at The River Course. The first round of match play at Cassique begins at 8 a.m. Match play continues through Thursday’s scheduled 36-hole final.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
