Amy Fruhwirth
Amy Fruhwirth, 23, of Phoenix, Ariz., and the medalist, took a commanding
lead with birdies on four consecutive holes and went on to defeat Heidi Voorhees,
18, of Valley Village, Calif., 5 and 4, in the final match at Prairie Dunes
Country Club, in Hutchinson, Kan.
With the 36-hole final all square after four holes, Fruhwirth went ahead for
good by winning five of the next six holes, four of them with birdies, to go
5 up after 10 holes.
Her lead was trimmed to 3 up at the end of the morning 18, and to 2 up after
25 holes, but Fruhwirth then birdied the next four holes to assume a commanding
6 up advantage,
Fruhwirth advanced to the final by defeating Martha Leach, of Austin, Texas,
7 and 6; Voorhees eliminated Martha Lang, of Geneva, Ill., 3 and 2. Of the three
former champions who advanced to match play, none managed to advance past the
second round.
Anne Sander was beaten in the first round by Italy's Catarina Quintarelli,
and Carol Semple Thompson and Vicki Goetze each won one match before losing
in the round of 32.
Fruhwirth won the qualifying medal with a 36-hole score of even-par 144, one
stroke better than 17-year-old Emilee Klein, of Studio City, Calif., who captured
the U.S. Girls' Junior title the previous week.
