1990
Pat Hurst
Pat Hurst, 21, of San Leandro, California, scored a par 4 on the first extra
hole and defeated Stephanie Davis of Bainbridge Island, Washington, at the Canoe
Brook Country Club, in Summit, New Jersey.
Three holes down after the morning round, Miss Hurst rallied and won four
of the first eight holes in the afternoon round to go 1 up. Miss Davis then
birdied the next to last hole to draw all square, and each player parred the
final hole, sending the match to extra holes.
The Women's Amateur is Miss Hurst's second USGA title; she had won the 1986
Girls' Junior. Miss Hurst defeated three members of the 1990 Curtis Cup team
to reach the semifinals. From the second round through the quarterfinals, she
defeated, in order, Katie Peterson, 3 and 1; Robin Weiss, 7 and 6; and Vicki
Goetze, 1 up.
Miss Hurst defeated Delphine Bourson 2 up in her semifinal match, using a
strong second nine to gain the lead, just as she had done many times in the
championship.
A senior at San Jose State University, Miss Hurst capped her summer by playing
for the United States in the U.S. Women's World Amateur Team Championship, in
Christchurch, New Zealand. The United States won.
