Two Past Champions Among Six Sharing Medalist Honors At 1-Over-Par 144

Bandon, Ore. – Two past champions are among the six golfers who completed 36 holes at 1-over-par 144 Monday to share medalist honors at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Austin Eaton of North Sutton, N.H., the 2004 champion, George Zahringer of New York, the 2002 champion, and Richard Berkmeyer of St. Louis, Mo., finished their second round of stroke play Monday with scores of 75, 73 and 72 respectively. Tim Hogarth of Northridge, Calif., Trip Kuehne of Irving, Texas, and Stephen Sear of Washoe Valley, Nev., completed their second round Sunday with totals of 144.

Play was halted Sunday due to darkness with 132 golfers still on the course. Heavy rains halted play for nearly three hours before golfers went back on the course at 5:25 p.m. (PT).

John Adams of San Clemente, Calif., and Dan Whitaker of Cle Elum, Wash., who shared the first round lead with 4-under-par 68s, were among six who finished a stroke behind the medalists at 145. Tim Mickelson of San Diego, the younger brother of professional golfer Phil Mickelson, was in a group of eight at 146.

Play continues Monday at the par-72, 6,988-yard Bandon Dunes layout with the first round of match play for the low 64 scorers. Ten golfers were involved in a playoff at 8-over 151 to determine the final five places for match play.

Among those safely advancing to match play were former champions Danny Green (1999) of Jackson, Tenn., and Kevin Marsh (2005) of Las Vegas, Nev., at 147 and Nathan Smith (2003) at 151, who played six playoff holes to get the 64th spot. Buddy Marucci, the 1995 U.S. Amateur runner-up to Tiger Woods and two-time USA Walker Cup team member, also advanced with a 147 total.

Todd Mitchell of Bloomington, Ill, posted a remarkable 4-under-par 68 at Bandon Dunes in tough weather conditions Sunday to rebound from his opening round of 82 and make match play at 150. His 68 was five strokes better than anyone else who finished on Sunday.

“I figured I had shot myself out of it Saturday, so I had no fear,” said Mitchell.

Four past champions failed to advance to match play, including the defending champion Dave Womack of McDonough, Ga., who finished at 155.

The Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
