1992
Danny Yates
Danny Yates, 42, of Atlanta, Ga., took advantage of David Lind's putting
problems on the 18th green of the final match to win the 1992 Mid-Amateur
at Detroit (Mich.) Golf Club, 1 up.
With the match all square, Yates and Lind both reached the 18th green
in regulation. Lind's first putt, from 65 feet, drew to within five
feet of the hole, but from there he missed twice more and conceded
the hole. Only a number of great shots early in the round kept Yates
in the match.
He rolled in a 50-foot birdie putt at the par-5 fourth hole, made a
25-foot par putt to halve the par-3 11th, then halved the next hole
with a brilliant chip to within two feet. Lind still led by 2-up
playing the par-5 14th, but there he made bogey and lost the hole.
When Lind failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker at No.
16, the match returned to all square.
Jim Stuart, of Macon, Ga., the two-time and defending champion, lost
in the first round to Jack Kearney, of East Longmeadow, Mass., 2
and 1. Medalist John Grace, 44, of Fort Worth, Texas, got as far
as the second round before losing to Scott Regner, of Ponte Vedra
Beach, Fla.
A record 3,692 entries were accepted and among those qualifying for
the championship proper was Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench. He
shot 80-76 and failed to qualify for match play.
