1989
James Taylor
Thirty-year-old James Taylor of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., won three consecutive
holes on the final nine and defeated William Hadden of North Haven,
Conn., 4 and 3, in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at
Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
Taylor took the lead for good with a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole. He birdied
again, on the par-5 ninth hole and was 2 up before Hadden birdied
the 10th, closing the gap.
Taylor reasserted himself by winning the 12th, 13th, and 14th holes to
go 4 up with only four holes still to play. And when the two halved
the par-5 15th, the match was over. On his way to the final, Taylor
defeated David Eger of Ponte Vedra, Fla., the 1988 champion,
by 2 and 1.
