Three Share Medalist Honors at 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur

Greenwich, Conn. – Three players, including two insurance executives from the same company, shared medalist honors at the 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, being held at The Stanwich Club (par 72, 6,952 yards) and the Round Hill Club (par 71, 6,560 yards).

George Zahringer, 49, of New York, N.Y., Pat Carter, 34, of Lesage, W.Va., and Bill Sharpe, 33, of Edmond, Okla., finished at 1-under-par 142 to lead the field of 264 players after 36 holes of stroke play into Monday’s first round of match play.

Sharpe and Carter work for the same insurance firm – Woodman of the World Life – based in Omaha, Neb. Sharpe’s caddie is a Woodman’s field manager, Daryl Hardaway.

Zahringer, who was the 2001 Mid-Amateur runner-up and holds a membership at Stanwich, shot a 2-over-par 74 after recording the low score at Round Hill on Saturday, a 3-under-par 68.

Carter, who has won eight straight West Virginia Amateurs and was a Mid-Am quarterfinalist in 1996 and 1997, followed his even-par 72 at Stanwich with a 1-under-par 70 at Round Hill.

Sharpe started with a 2-under-par 69 at Round Hill to accompany Sunday’s 1-over-par 73 at Stanwich.

“My brother’s (Earl) been caddieing for me and he said he didn’t know why I’d want to be medalist,” said Carter, who was hired by Sharpe in 2000. “He was kind of hoping I’d finish second or third. The jinx has got to be broken sooner or later so maybe this year.”

In 22 previous Mid-Amateurs, the medalist has never won the championship.

“I think I can win and I have won before so that’s not a new step or an additional evolution of my competitive golf game,” Zahringer said. “It’s really staying focused and composed. Sometimes in a match, it’s making fewer mistakes than your opponent, sometime it’s playing better than him. There’s still a lot of golf left. Everybody stay tuned, including myself.”

Three strokes back were Danny Green, 45, of Jackson, Tenn., who won the Mid-Amateur in 1999, and Brad Hardin, 25, of Martinsville, Ind., whose sister Leigh Anne was the 1998 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion and a member of the 2002 USA Curtis Cup squad.

Green, a 2001 USA Walker Cup team member, shot 4-over-par 76 at Stanwich, which included four birdies. He had shot 2-under-par 69 at Round Hill Saturday for a 36-hole total of 2-over-par 145. Hardin, playing in his first USGA championship, had a 3-over-par 75 at Round Hill after a 2-under-70 at Stanwich.

“The course (Stanwich) wasn’t difficult today, I just lost my swing,” said the amiable Green. “As good as I played yesterday was as bad as I played today. I just wasn’t hitting the ball well. I think every fairway I hit, I made birdie.”

Safely into the match play field is defending champion Tim Jackson, 43, of Germantown, Tenn., who fired a 4-over-par 76 to finish at 4-over-par 147.

“You’ve got to know when you are putting uphill and when you’re putting downhill,” Jackson said of playing Stanwich. “You’ve got to know which greens receive shots and which ones don’t. Some putts are extremely fast and some are extremely slow. You just have to learn those spots in the green. It is such a big local knowledge course.”

David Herzog, 29, of Palmdale, Calif., matched Jackson at 147 when he shot a 3-under-par 69 at Stanwich Saturday and followed it with a 7-over-par 78 at Round Hill.

Notables missing the cut were 1997 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Ken Bakst of New York, N.Y. (83-77—160), 2000 champion Greg Puga of Los Angeles, Calif. (78-77—155), 1992 champion Danny Yates of Atlanta, Ga. (79-79—158).

A 12-man playoff for the final seven spots in the match play field of 64 will begin at 9 a.m. Monday. The playoff is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m. on Stanwich’s 10th hole.

The second and third rounds of match play are set for Tuesday and the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds for Wednesday. The Championship runs through Thursday’s 36-hole final match.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
