Sharpe Leads After First-Round Morning Action at 2002 U.S. Mid-AmateurGreenwich, Conn. – Bill Sharpe, 33, of Oklahoma City, Okla., shot a 2-under-par 69 to hold a one-stroke lead midway through the first round of stroke play Saturday at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, being held at The Stanwich Club (par-72, 6,952 yards) and the Round Hill Club (par-71, 6,560 yards).
Sharpe, playing at Round Hill, got off to a shaky start with a double bogey on the par-3 11th, his second hole of the day. But he recovered to birdie the par-4 12th hole and played bogey-free golf the rest of the way.
“Fortunately that was only my second hole so I had 16 holes left to play and I just tried not to make any other mistakes from that point,” Sharpe said.
One stroke behind Sharpe at Round Hill is Chris Cupit, 34, of Alpharetta, Ga., who recorded an eagle on the par-5 15th hole en route to a one-under-par 70.
Jeff Knox, 39, of Augusta, Ga., led the way at The Stanwich Club with a 1-under-par 71. He was the only player to finish under par from the morning’s action at Stanwich.
“I’m surprised that with as good as the weather was that we didn’t have more low scores,” Knox said. “The difference here is the slope of the greens. If you’re not below the hole, you’re going to struggle.”
The remaining 132 players in the field of 264 still have yet to complete their first round. Defending champion Tim Jackson, 43, of Germantown, Tenn., teed off at 12:30 p.m. at the Round Hill Club.
Play continues Saturday afternoon with the completion of the first round. The second round of stroke play is set for Sunday before the field is trimmed to the low 64 scorers who will advance to match play. The Championship runs through Thursday’s 36-hole final match.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
