Zahringer Leads After First Round At 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur

Greenwich, Conn. – George Zahringer, 49, of New York, N.Y., shot a 3-under-par 68 to hold the lead after the first round of stroke play Saturday at the 22nd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, being held at The Stanwich Club (par-72, 6,952 yards) and the Round Hill Club (par-71, 6,560 yards).

Zahringer, runner-up at the 2001 U.S. Mid-Amateur and a member of The Stanwich Club, shot a 3-under-par 68 at the Round Hill Club. Steady play on the greens was the key for Zahringer, who had 28 putts during his round.

“I feel like I’m putting very well,” Zahringer said. “Putting is important at Round Hill the way the golf course is set up. Unless your short irons are really on, you can have some really tricky two putts because of the undulations.”

Also benefiting from a hot putter was David Herzog, 29, of Palmdale, Calif., who needed only 27 putts at The Stanwich Club on his way to a 3-under-par 69. He recorded four straight birdies, starting at the par-5 5th hole, en route to a 4-under-par 32 on the front nine.

Herzog, the 1993 Rhode Island Amateur champion, played collegiately at Rollins (Fla.) College. After leaving Rollins, Herzog joined the U.S. Marine Corps and didn’t touch a golf club for almost six years.

“I didn’t miss it,” Herzog said. “But then I got invited to play in a member guest at Metacomet (R.I.) two years ago and fell in love all over again.”

Nine players finished under par at the two courses, including 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Danny Green, 45, of Jackson, Tenn., who shot a 2-under-par 69 at Round Hill.

“I would have liked to have kept it at 4-under like I was at one point but if you’d have told me I’d have 69 before I teed off, I’d have taken it and watched football today,” Green said.

Defending champion Tim Jackson, 43, of Germantown, Tenn., is three shots behind Zahringer after firing an even-par 71 at Round Hill.

“This course is a lot harder than what the scorecard shows, particularly the hole placements today,” Jackson said. “It was a good solid start.”

Play continues Sunday with the second round of stroke play, before the field is trimmed to the low 64 scorers who will advance to match play. The Championship runs through Thursday’s 36-hole final match.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
