Stand off at Waco lasts 51 days

Janet Reno first female Attorney General

1993

Jeff Thomas, 34, of South Plainfield, N.J., rolled in a 6-foot birdie putt to take a 3-up lead with five holes remaining, then held off a late charge by Joey Ferrari to win the final of the 13th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, 1 up, at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

Ferrari, 37, of Lodi, Calif., birdied the ninth hole to cut Thomas's lead to 2-up, but he then hit his tee shot at the 10th hole deep into the trees and stumbled to a double bogey six. Thomas hit his approach at the 11th into the water and bogeyed to again trim the lead to 2-up, but a birdie at No. 13 gave him his largest lead of the match.

Ferrari got to within 2-down when Thomas three-putted the 15th green, then took the 17th when he hit his approach to 3 feet and made the putt for birdie. His effort to send the match to extra holes just missed when his birdie putt from the fringe of the 18th green rolled over the left edge of the hole.

The medalist was Jay Coatta, of Hopkins, Minn, who led match play qualifications with a 36-hole total of 5-under-par 139. Coatta advanced to the third round, where he led Danny Green at the turn, 2 up, before making four 6s on the second nine and losing, 1 down.

The championship attracted 3,600 entries, the third highest figure in the Mid-Amateur's 13-year history.
