1989
James Taylor, age 30, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, won three
consecutive holes on the final nine and defeated William Hadden,
of North Haven, Connecticut, by 4 and 3 in the U.S. Mid-Amateur
Championship, at Crooked Stick Golf Club, in Carmel, Indiana.
Taylor took the lead for good with a birdie on the par 5 5th hole.
He birdied again, on the par 5 ninth hole and was 2 up before Hadden
birdied the 10th, closing the gap.
Taylor reasserted himself by winning the 12th, 13th, and 14th
holes to go 4 up with only four holes still to play. And when the
two halved the par 5 15th, the match was over. On his way to the
final, Taylor defeated David Eger, of Ponte Vedra, Florida, the
1988 champion, by 2 and 1.
