1988
David Eger, 36, a reinstated amateur from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida,
defeated Scott Mayne of Warwick, Bermuda, 2 and 1, in the final
at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansa.
Three-time Mid-Amateur champion Jay Sigel of Berwyn, Pennsylvania;
1983 runner-up Randy Sonnier of The Woodlands, Texas; and John Harris
of Edina, Minnesota, shared the qualifying medal at even-par 140.
Sigel and Sonnier were eliminated in the second round.
Harris advanced to the third round before losing. After defeating
Bill Holstead of Wichita Falls, Texas, 1 up in his opening match,
Eger defeated his next three opponents without playing the 15th
hole.
In the semifinals, Eger was extended to the 18th hole for the
second time. He eliminated Shawn Baker of Brattleboro, Vermont,
1 up. Mayne twice won matches on the 18th green on his way to the
final and, in the quarterfinal round, defeated Richard Stuntz of
Lawrence, Kansas, in 23 holes.
Mayne then scored a 2-and-1 victory over Craig Steinberg of Van
Nuys, California, to reach the final. Eger birdied the first hole
of the final to go 1 up and was 2 up after another birdie at the
third. The next three holes were halved with pars before Mayne birdied
the seventh.
Mayne squared the match when Eger three-putted the 10th hole for
a bogey. The next four holes were halved, then Eger regained the
lead when he birdied the 15th. Another birdie on 16 gave him a two-hole
lead, and he closed out the match at the 17th with his third consecutive
birdie. The USGA accepted 2,492 entries for the championship.
