Jay Sigel, 43, of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, defeated David Lind of Chicago on the 20th hole to win his fifth USGA championship, this time at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas. He also won the U.S. Amateur in 1982 and 1983 and the Mid-Amateur in 1983 and 1985.

Only Bob Jones, who won nine championships; JoAnne Carner, eight; and Glenna Collett Vare, Hollis Stacy and Jack Nicklaus, six apiece; have won more USGA titles. Randy Sonnier of The Woodlands, Texas, runner-up to Sigel in the 1983 championship, earned the qualifying medal at one-under-par 139.

In the first qualifying round, Don Bliss of St. Louis, who started at the 10th tee, scored holes-in-one on the 10th and eighth holes. He is the first player to score two holes-in-one in the same round in a USGA championship.

Sonnier advanced to the semifinal before losing to Sigel, 4 and 2. Lind eliminated Dean Overturf of Dallas, 1 up, in the other semifinal match. Sigel took a 1-up lead after four holes of the final but Lind won three of the next seven to take a two-hole advantage with seven to play. Sigel cut into Lind's lead with a winning par at the 14th, then drew even with a birdie at the 15th.

Halves at the 16th, 17th and 18th sent the Mid-Amateur to extra holes for the first time. Sigel won with a par at the 20th hole. The USGA accepted a record 2,620 entries for the championship.
