1984

Michael Podolak, 30, of Fargo, North Dakota, defeated Bob Lewis, Jr., of Warren, Ohio, 5 and 4, in the final match, at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Podolak, a reinstated amateur, was appearing in his sixth USGA competition and third Mid-Amateur, and he never before qualified for match play.

Before reaching the final he defeated Chad Williams on the 19th hole, Dick Siderowf on the 20th hole, and David Jacobsen on the 19th hole.

Lewis, the third reinstated amateur among the four semifinalists, won five matches without reaching the 18th hole. Podolak won three of the first six holes of the final and remained 3 up after the first nine holes. The pattern continued on the 10th hole.

Podolak won with a birdie to yet another Lewis bogey, and Podolak went 5 up at the 12th. Lewis won the 13th, but Podolak holed a curving 20-foot birdie on the 14th hole to end the match. The USGA accepted a record 2,243 entries.
